About the Program

In mid 2028, after 100 years of providing energy to Australian homes and businesses, the Yallourn coal mine and power station will close.

EnergyAustralia gave seven year’s notice of the closure so we could support the people who matter most – our workforce and the local community.

We know Yallourn means a lot to Gippsland

Yallourn has a rich history, welcoming prime ministers and royalty, and employing generations of families. It's a place where people have met, going onto marry and raise families in Gippsland.

The original town was closed in the 1980s to expand the coal mine, with residents relocated. Today, relocated houses are scattered across surrounding towns.

The Yallourn Power Station and mine operate on the traditional lands of the Braiakaulung people of the Gunaikurnai nation. We work closely with local Traditional Owners and Elders, who advise us on areas of cultural significance.

Yallourn’s connection to the local community runs deep.

We are working to make the Yallourn site post-closure, a place locals and visitors can enjoy and one that provides potential economic opportunities for the Latrobe Valley.

To achieve this, we are focused on:

  • Rehabilitating the site to reduce the risk of flooding and fires, creating a home for fauna and wildlife.

  • Ensuring that the site allows for potential recreation and tourism uses for the community.

  • Supporting the local community through grants and other activities.

  • Helping workers at Yallourn retrain and plan for their future through the $10m Yallourn Transition Program.

  • Investing in an energy future for Gippsland.
