Latrobe Valley Energy Storage Project Underway
Construction will now commence on the four-hour, 350 MW energy storage system, part of EnergyAustralia’s commitment to ensuring the Latrobe Valley continues to play a role in powering Australian homes and businesses after Yallourn closes in June 2028.
Once completed in 2027, the Wooreen Energy Storage System will be capable of powering 230,000 homes over a four-hour period before needing to be recharged.
With an investment of over $700 million, it will be one of the largest energy storage systems in Australia, capable of providing vital grid stability for local communities and businesses.
The name ‘Wooreen” was gifted to the project by the Gunaikurnai elders and it means “light” in their local language. of itself. It always does.
